i have commitment issues.
i know what you're probably thinking:
"commitment issues? ERIN? no way? she's been with this same guy for like... what? 3 or 4 years?"
but that's not the kind of commitment i'm talking about.
let me explain.
i'm good at stuff.
i'm really good at a lot of things.
photography, painting, creative writing (so i've heard)... the list goes on.
but i have a hard time with commitment.
i find something i love, something i'm fantastic at, enjoy it for a while, get bored, and then i move on to the next thing.
piano. saxophone. clarinet. drums. golf. biology. drawing.
these are just a few things that i am or was passionate about at one point in time.
the problem is that i always got good... never great, never exceptional.
my dad says it, everyone says it:
"Erin, you have so much talent, but you're not using it to its full potential. Find one thing and stick with it, become marvelous at it."
And I want to. believe me. i do.
but every once in a while that little demon of insecurity pops up on my shoulder and says something like,
"Eh, you'll never make a career out of this insignificant little hobby of yours" or "You're just wasting your time. find something productive to do, like read a book on managerial finance, science, or history"
and this rips away the confidence and assurance that were once standing firmly behind my talents.
but today, i, ERIN GENEEN WESLEY is shoeing that little demon away FOREVER.
i'm going to pursue my dreams and follow up with the two things i love and am MOST passionate about - photography & film.
Often times people say i'll need a backup plan. What if it doesn't work out? Do you have a plan b?
and usually i'll answer with something like, yes, that's why i'm majoring in business, i'll have something to fall back on. people with MBAs don't have much of a hard time finding jobs.
but that's my first mistake! a plan b!
there should be no plan b!
I should think like a Marine.
"Marines don't talk about failure. They talk about victory."
from now on my motto is "Plan B is to make Plan A work."
No, i'm not saying i've found the light and i'm dropping out from fisk and going to pursue my dreams at an art school.
i'm still gonna finish up these last few semesters with straight As (majoring in Business Admin), but instead of looking at my major as a backup plan, I'm going to look at it more like this:
Once I start getting major clients, i'm going to need to handle business more professionally - i'll need office space, I'll be off on business trips, taking pictures in the bahamas and whatnot - I can't handle EVERYTHING thousands of miles away, so i'll need secretaries to handle some of the paperwork, booking agents, creative directors, accountants, etc. So my reason for taking business classes is that one day, I'll have my own company and i'll need to know how to run it."
so now that i've finally made this huge, life altering decision, no looking back.
from now on, i'm eating and sleeping photography and film.
learning as much as i can to ensure a prosperous future in a field that i LOVE.
i'm reaching for the sky, baby!
wish me luck!
i'm excited about the future. =)
peace.

thanks roomie! you're the best in the west... or the east/southeast? lol.... whatever...
yes, you know me OH so well. (so i know the above comment won't be an awkward read for you... haha... i appreciate you. you're one of the few people who understands my awkwardness).
adios amigo....
aw, im happy for you :)
i support you !
and i need to start thinking like thisss... youre too wise for me...give me a couple more years and ill be a Gabie-version of Erin ahhaa if that made sense.
"Marines don't talk about failure. They talk about victory."
-- that quote hits home. think like marines !
so...i feel the same way..its crazy cuz that blog entry was me in a nutshell...i went from acting to writing to producing to tryna be the next tyler perry (only female and cuter lol)...film, to mathematics, to computer science, to biochemistry...piano to violin to guitar back to piano then back to guitar..
thats why my one and only new years resolution is to finish the things that i start.
lol. no Gabie, i'm just trying to get on YOUR level with the deepness. haha. thanks though - it completely made sense.
and alisha: yeah, i remember your producing phase - that's why i was a little confused when in some of your aways i'd see "studying for bio", etc. etc. i always thought you were like a mass comm. major. but indeed, good luck with your resolution, finish what you start, especially if it's your passion and you're great at it - the outcome could be MIND-BLOWING, spectacular!
it's official. I'm inspired! =)
